”I did not come to Australia to work in hospitality, I am an Engineer!” said a fellow skilled immigrant, who travelled thousands of kilometres from their home country and arrived to Australia to start their career in Engineering.
This is a big problem in Australia: The Australian industry is full of employers who are desperately looking for great talent that can help carrying their business forward.
Ironically the same industry is full of skilled immigrants & qualified individuals who are struggling to find employment relevant to their backgrounds…
When I first moved here, this did not make any sense to me!
Where are all these jobs, people were talking about?..
And why I am not able to get a single interview out of 50-100 applications I am making?
Years passed and through hard work I figured it out…
I found my first engineering job in Australia, then I became a senior professional, then I became a manager who works with, hires, and manages Aussies.
At this point I realised the answers were so different than I first imagined.
Before finding the answers, I thought people were discriminating me by deeming my overseas experience not relevant.
Some fellow immigrants were telling me: “Best jobs go to Australians”.
But then I was looking at my Australian friends that I met in my social circle, they were the least discriminatory people I ever knew.
They were friendly, curious, and happy to help me whenever I need support…
But why was this friction in my job search then?
And then one day I looked at the mirror and asked myself: “Why am I struggling to make my way into the industry?”
And suddenly I saw the answer, right in front of me…
It was me who was resisting to change.
I was being rigid, judgmental, and hard headed...
Instead of transforming myself to become a good fit for the industry, I was trying to force my way into the industry through sheer persistency…
After realising this, I smiled at myself in the mirror and said: “You silly man, you are the one who is new here.”
This is not only a new country, this is a new continent that has been isolated from the rest of the world for tens of thousands of years...
Being isolated, girt by sea, and far from rest of the world Australia has developed a very different and distinct industry, standards, and workplace culture—a product of isolated cultural & industrial evolution.
Just like the animals (say kangaroos, flying fox, or koalas) in Australia evolved quite different from the rest of the world, culture & industry in Australia has also evolved very differently from the rest of the world…
After this realisation, I rolled up my sleeves, and started studying the Australian industry and its practices and gradually transformed myself to become what the industry needed...
✅ I investigated and found out what Australian employers needed to see in my CV& Cover Letter so that they would call me for an interview.
✅ I investigated and found out what I needed to do to become a good fit for the industry and in the eyes of the employers in Australia.
And I made it after 4 months of grinding with trial & error:
I found a full-time qualified role in Sydney…
After going through this journey, I realised, if I knew the things I know today I could have found that job within 1 month (instead of grueling 4 months, which was full of friction).
Going through this painful process made me realise this huge gap and I started helping my fellow skilled immigrants & new residents to find their dream jobs as soon and easy as possible…
Funnily enough, I also realised my way of finding jobs was actually able to help more than 22 private clients to find their jobs in record times (as quick as 4-6 weeks).
But how come my method can be so effective? Or is it really?
