How not to apply for jobs in Australia?
Written by Mert Berberoglu on Nov. 12th 2019
Many skilled immigrants when they first move to Australia–thinking "job search is a numbers game"–throw 100-200 applications to various employers with their standard CV & Cover Letter. Result?~

Only 1-2 % of these applications turn into interviews. And when a person gets 1 interview out of 100 applications, they feel like this is their only one chance of getting a job in Australia. As a result, they get nervous, their posture gets broken, and the interview panel smell their desperation. And thus, they blow the interview...

Some persist and some quit. Those who persist manage to make it work within 1-2 years in average. Those who quit, they end up in low paying casual jobs and waste their most productive years.

Perhaps you also got an advice from a friend, who told you this is what you need to do to find jobs in Australia:

1. Quickly prepare a resume and cover letter to detail your overseas experience and studies
2. Go to seek.com.au
3. Do > 100-200 applications with the same resume and cover letter and see what happens...

Here is what happens to your applications if you adopt the above strategy: In 99% of the cases, your CV and Cover Letter will be eliminated by a screening software or an HR trainee. For the remaining 1%, you will get phone screenings for jobs having no alignment with your career goals and potential. You will probably be called for an interview but only for commission sales positions (without base salary) or multi level marketing, which may actually get you to spend your time, energy, and resources even further...

Well I hear some people saying, "but my friend John found his job like this?"... Well may be, but in that case I bet your friend John has settled into a job far below his true potential. While he could have been working at a progressive and rewarding company instead with a much better position and pay. Now that his comfort zone is established around a low quality job, John doesn't even bother with going back to the market. Even if he wishes to go, he hasn't developed the necessary job search skills and confidence to go and get his dream job.

So to avoid being like John, drop this inefficient approach–there are much easier ways to find jobs in Australia. Put your effort in at the right time and at the right place. Adopt the below strategy, which we use all the time with my clients, helping them finding the qualified jobs they deserve in Australia in as quick as 4-6 weeks:

1. Do your market research and pick up your target industry segment (niche): Australian industries are highly specialised and focusing on a small segment will help you concentrate your forces and get much better results in your job search.

2. Tailor your CV and Cover Letter according to the position you desire in that market segment: In Australia irrelevant gets instantly eliminated and relevant sells. Make sure your CV & Cover Letter shows you as the most relevant candidate for the position you are applying to.

3. Find your target companies and directly approach them: Avoid recruitment consultants, most of whom are looking for easy business (swapping people between companies) and they are mostly after candidates who are already employed in Australia. You need to approach the employers directly to avoid unnecessary screening.

4. Start with 1 quality application per day and speed up to maximum 2-3 quality applications per day (less is more): Applications take time. If it is your first time applying for jobs in Australia you will need to spend a lot of effort making your CV & Cover Letter resonate with employers. It is ok to spend an entire day for a single application (or even more) if you are in the beginning of your job search. You will get faster when you figure things out.

5. Get help from a professional who has been through the same journey: I see a lot of people trying to re-invent the wheel when they first move to Australia and delay their process unnecessarily.
